LA PLATA, Md. – A former Maryland substitute teacher has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for inappropriate conduct with several middle school students and engaging in online sexual discussions.
An investigation was initiated in February 2023 following reports from multiple students at General Smallwood Middle School that 27-year-old Malcolm Fluellyn, who had been a permanent substitute at the school since the previous December, had touched them inappropriately.

According to investigators, Fluellyn engaged in inappropriate touching of the victims, some of whom were touched multiple times while at the Charles County school. Additionally, it was reported that he contacted some of the children via Instagram and made inappropriate sexual remarks about their bodies.
The victims, aged between 12 and 13, numbered eight in total. Fluellyn was promptly dismissed from the school once authorities were made aware of the situation.
Fluellyn pleaded guilty in February 2024 and was handed a 46-year prison sentence, with 31 years suspended, for two counts of sexual abuse of a minor and six counts of fourth-degree sexual offense. Following his release, he will be under supervised probation for five years.
