A section of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, collapsed after a large boat collided with it early on Tuesday. Reports indicated that a large container ship struck the bridge that carries north and southbound lanes of Interstate 695, leading to a fire and causing multiple vehicles to fall into the Patapsco River below.
A statement from petty officer Matthew West of the Coast Guard in Baltimore revealed that a container ship named “Dali” flying under a Singapore flag was involved in the crash. The vessel was en route from Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, as its final destination, according to Marine Traffic and Vessel Finder maps and data.
Following the incident, the Maryland Transportation Authority announced the closure of all lanes in both directions on the bridge around 2 a.m., with traffic being redirected to I-95 and I-895. Baltimore Mayor Brendon Scott confirmed his awareness of the situation and planned to visit the bridge along with other city and state officials.
“Emergency responders are at the scene and actively working on the situation,” he mentioned in a social media update.
