An investigation is underway by the Maryland State Police following a hit-and-run incident and subsequent pursuit that took place on Wednesday, March 27th, in Wicomico County that occurred around 10:25 a.m. that morning, an off-duty trooper from the Maryland State Police Salisbury Barrack was driving his marked vehicle on Airport Road near Salisbury Regional Airport. He encountered a work zone with a flagging operation in progress, allowing northbound traffic to move through.
Preliminary findings suggest that the driver of a blue Jeep, positioned ahead of the trooper’s vehicle, tried to bypass the work zone by swerving into the northbound lane. The Jeep then veered back into the southbound lanes to avoid oncoming traffic but ended up driving off the road into a ditch.
The driver of the Jeep was identified as Jamal Scarborough, a 27-year-old from Marion Station, Maryland. He reportedly accelerated his vehicle, running over orange casings on the road and striking one of the utility workers who was on the ground performing their duties.
The injured worker, a 64-year-old man, was first taken by ambulance to TidalHealth Hospital and later airlifted to Christiana Hospital in Delaware for further medical attention.
Following the incident, the off-duty trooper and other law enforcement officers pursued Scarborough along Airport Road, Maryland Route 12, and Nutters Cross Road until he was apprehended in a field near Johnson Road in Salisbury.
Scarborough was arrested at the scene and now faces multiple charges including first-degree assault, second-degree assault, causing life-threatening injuries due to negligent vehicle operation, as well as attempting to elude police. Scarborough is being held without bond at the Wicomico County Detention Center, pending further investigation by the Maryland State Police Crash Team.
