Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group, has confirmed that its former leader, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike near Beirut. Nasrallah had been at the helm of Hezbollah for more than three decades, including during the 2006 conflict with Israel.
The recent actions by Israel against Hezbollah have been severe, resulting in the deaths of most of the group’s leadership and the destruction of numerous weapons caches and bases. The first strike involved remotely detonating Hezbollah operatives’ pagers, which disrupted their communication network, causing casualties and widespread damage. This was followed by a massive Israeli Air Force operation that resulted in significant casualties among Lebanese civilians.
These developments have escalated tensions in the region, with a considerable number of civilian casualties marking the deadliest violence since the 2006 war. The elimination of Nasrallah and other key Hezbollah figures has diminished the group’s ability to mount a strong response, but it raises concerns about potential retaliation from Iran, Hezbollah’s primary supporter in the area.
