On Wednesday, November 19, 35-year-old Terrance Terrone White, Jr. from Salisbury was found guilty of being involved in a straw purchase of a firearm and two counts of unlawfully possessing a regulated firearm. This verdict followed a three-day jury trial overseen by Associate Judge M. Maciarello. White’s sentencing has been delayed until a pre-sentencing investigation is completed.
A “straw purchase” occurs when someone illegally buys a firearm for another individual who is not allowed to own one or for someone who wants to keep their identity hidden from the transaction.
On November 16, 2024, White sold a gun to 31-year-old Dequan Bratten, who, later that day, shot his estranged wife four times. During the trial, evidence showed that White supplied ammunition to Bratten, demonstrated how to operate the firearm, and was aware of Bratten’s intentions towards the victim. However, the jury did not convict White of being an accomplice to attempted murder.
“Individuals who engage in illegal firearms trade pose a serious danger to our community and will be held responsible,” stated SA Jamie L. Dykes. “Terrance White’s conviction demonstrates Wicomico County law enforcement and my Office’s dedication to holding violent offenders accountable and ensuring the safety of our community.”
