Despite Denials, Maryland Governor Wes Moore’s Actions Indicate He Is Promoting His Presence As A Presidential Candidate
It seems to be a thing among Maryland Governors. They think that they should run for President even though they come from a small Mid-Atlantic state that has no real footprint on the electoral college landscape. Most of the time, people don’t even know who they are.
Think about it. Martin O’Malley. Larry Hogan. And now, Wes Moore.
O’Malley polled at about 2-3% nationally in the 2016 Democrat primary.
Marylanders Don’t Like Martin O’Malley, So Why Would The Rest Of America? | FiveThirtyEight
Larry Hogan, who never saw a progressive interview show he didn’t want to appear on, a man who called himself “America’s favorite Governor,” made noises about running for President in 2024 but gave up that idea up when he realized he didn’t even appear as a blip on the Presidential race radar. Instead, he took his ” I hate Donald Trump” tour to the Maryland U.S. Senate race against Democrat Angela Alsobrooks. The result? He lost by over 12 percentage points. That’s what happens when you call some of the people who supported you through two successful gubernatorial campaigns, “fringe whackos.”
And now, Wes Moore, current Governor of Maryland, seems to be making the same mistake. He claims he is not running, but everything he does and every interview he takes indicates he is. And the citizens of Maryland are paying for it. He’s joining other current Democrat Governors like J.B. Pritzker of Illinois and Gavin Newsom of California who are focusing all their energy, all their time, all their speeches, on running against Trump.
Should we remind everyone that Trump won’t be running in 2028?
Better yet should we remind them that they are currently being paid by the citizens of their state to solve problems THERE?
Let’s look at Governor Moore and what he has been talking about in the last few weeks. First of all, Moore is the king of denial.
He criticized the previous administration for masking long-term fiscal challenges and leaving behind structural issues that Moore’s administration is now confronting. Say what you will about Larry Hogan, he left the state in a good financial state. Maryland has a $5.5 billion dollar surplus, one that even Moore acknowledged. He referred to it as a “fortunate financial position”
Governor Hogan leaves his successor with a $5 billion budget surplus
Moore squandered it all, spending Maryland into a $3.3 billion deficit by 2025.
So he enacted, with the help of the overtly Dem legislature, over $1.6 billion in new taxes and fees:
Digital Ad Tax | 2.5%–10% tax on large tech firms’ ad revenue |
Tech Services Tax | 3% tax on services like cloud storage, web hosting, and data entry |
Capital Gains Surcharge | 2% surcharge on capital gains income |
Cannabis Sales Tax | Increased from 9% to 12% |
Sports Betting Tax | Increased from 15% to 20% |
Vending Machine Sales | Now subject to 6% sales tax |
Bullion Sales Tax | 6% sales tax on gold and silver coins (previously exempt) |
🚗 Transportation-Related Fees
Fee Type | New Rate |
---|---|
Vehicle Excise Tax | Increased from 6% to 6.5% |
Tire Fee | $5 per tire |
Vehicle Registration | Up to $383 for large vehicles |
But, according to Moore, the only taxes he raised were on the rich. People didn’t buy that one and gave Wes the nicknames of “Spend Moore” and “Tax Moore.”
Sensing he was in trouble as his poll numbers dropped, Wes turned to the one idea every unsuccessful blue state governor loves. Attack Trump. Moore currently polls at 50% in state polls, a thirteen point drop since July. His support among independent voters has also dipped significantly—only 37% approve, while 53% disapprove.
That’s got to sting Wes, who seems to love being loved. When Trump called out the crime rate in Baltimore City, particularly the crimes committed by juveniles, Moore did his best Will Smith impression and told Trump to ” keep our name out of your mouth.”
Wes, you are not Will Smith.
Gov. Wes Moore to President Trump: ‘Keep our name out of your mouth’
Governor Moore dares Trump to see Baltimore’s real crime fight, not just rhetoric
Then he invited Trump to come “walk the streets of Baltimore” with him.
Moore might want to try doing that himself before he brings the President here:
Residents question governor’s stance as Baltimore crime rate exceeds D.C.’s ninefold
Regardless, Moore just can’t seem to get beyond the fact that he needs to make himself a hero to Dems across the country. In a recent interview on CBS, Moore said that redistricting the state was “on the table.” This is to counteract the state of Texas redistricting.
The ridiculous part of this is that there really is NO NEED to redistrict Maryland; a state where Democrats in the Legislator outnumber Republicans by a ridiculous ratio:
Chamber | Democrats | Republicans | Ratio (D:R) |
---|---|---|---|
Senate (47 members) | 34 | 13 | 2.6:1 |
House (141 members) | 102 | 39 | 2.6:1 |
And, the state has ONE Republican Congressman, Andy Harris.
So, there is really nothing for Moore to gain by redistricting.
Unless he is trying to compete with Gavin Newsom and J.B. Pritzker to be the Democrat presidential nominee in 2028. It’s like watching an episode of the old show JACKASS, where a cast of men performed crude, ridiculous, and self-injuring acts trying to outdo each other. The only difference is that Moore, Newsome, and Pritzker are injuring their own reputations, political futures, and the people of their states.
In the meantime, Moore seems more interested in neglecting his “real job” while his state is losing population, businesses, experiencing a juvenile crime crisis and losing the good credit rating we once had.
The citizens of Maryland are paying for his presidential campaign . We’re tired of it.
