On Sunday, March 2, a blaze erupted in Princess Anne of Somerset County, resulting in the destruction of two poultry barns and the death of around 41,000 chickens, as reported by the Maryland State Fire Marshal.
Firefighters were dispatched to 12033 Petes Hill Road at approximately 1:30 p.m., following a report from the property owner, Luan Nguyen, who noticed the flames. Officials stated that Nguyen had received a system alert about a potential issue about an hour before his arrival at the scene. By the time he got there, one of the chicken houses was already in ruins and had collapsed.
Nguyen made attempts to contain the fire but was quickly overwhelmed by the heat and flames, which also consumed his Toyota Highlander SUV. Firefighting crews responded swiftly and managed to restrict the blaze to the two chicken houses and the vehicle.
Nearly 30 firefighters worked together to control the fire, bringing it under control within 45 minutes. The estimated financial loss from this incident is $200,000. The cause of the fire is still being investigated by the Maryland State Fire Marshal, and fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
