In Norfolk, Virginia, the incidence of meningococcal disease is increasing. A recent health alert has been issued by the CDC to healthcare providers. Across the country, there have been 143 reported cases of meningitis this year, which marks a surge of 62 cases compared to the same period last year. Virginia is one of the states affected by this alarming trend.
Individuals who contract this disease may require treatment in the emergency room due to the potentially life-threatening infection known as meningitis. What essential information should you be aware of regarding meningitis?
According to Dr. Douglas Mitchell of CHKD, meningitis is characterized by an infection or inflammation of the meninges surrounding the brain. Common symptoms include headaches, fever, sensitivity to bright light, nausea, vomiting, and a stiff neck.
How does meningitis spread?
Dr. Douglas Mitchell, a pediatrician, explains that bacterial causes leading to meningitis typically require direct contact. Sharing drinks, using shared straws, kissing, or close contact commonly observed in family settings can all facilitate the transmission of these bacteria.
The recent increase in meningitis cases is primarily linked to a specific bacterial strain, similar to the strain that resulted in the recent death of an inmate at the Norfolk City Jail.
Since June 2022, the Virginia Department of Health has reported 35 confirmed cases in Virginia associated with this outbreak, including 6 fatalities.
Fortunately, there are several vaccines available to safeguard against meningitis. In Virginia schools, a vaccine is mandatory at age 11, and another is administered at age 16.
