By State Senator Johnny Mautz, District 37
Friends, I’m reaching out because something’s happening in Annapolis that threatens everything we value here on the Eastern Shore – our farms, our local say in how our land gets used, and our way of life.
Governor Moore just signed a law that strips away our counties’ ability to protect our best farmland from massive solar installations. That’s right – local zoning that’s protected our Priority Preservation Areas for decades can now be overruled by Annapolis bureaucrats who’ve probably never walked a cornfield.
This isn’t about being against clean energy. This is about outsiders telling us how to use our land without listening to our voices or understanding our communities.
But here’s the good news: We can fight back.
The Farmer’s Alliance for Rural Maryland (FARM) is working to get this law on the ballot so Maryland voters – not just politicians – can decide. They need 20,000 signatures by June 1st, and they need our help.
Here’s what I’m asking you to do:
- Visit www.farmersallianceruralmaryland.org and download a petition
- Get your neighbors, family, and friends to sign
- Share this with everyone you know who cares about preserving our agricultural heritage
This is about more than solar panels. This is about whether we get to decide what happens in our own backyards, or whether Annapolis makes those decisions for us.
Our Eastern Shore values aren’t just words on a campaign flyer – they’re about local control, respecting our farmers, and protecting the land that’s fed our families for generations.
Time’s running short. Let’s show them what Eastern Shore folks can do when we stand together.
Sincerely,![]() Maryland State Senate District 37 410-841-3590 (office) Caroline, Dorchester, Talbot, and Wicomico Counties |
