Somerset County Public Schools Win Battle with Superintendent

The long and turbulent saga within Somerset County Public Schools has finally reached its conclusion, resulting in a victory for students, parents, and teachers. The Superintendent is now gone, leaving behind a trail of damage to the school system’s leadership, finances, and overall stability.

It all began when the new Board of Education was elected. From day one, the Superintendent clashed with the Board on nearly every issue – like taking an entire year to issue a proper dress code and months of infighting over who owns the budget.

In the end, the Superintendent lost.

Under the Maryland Education Article, the Superintendent serves as an employee of the Board of Education. No employee can continually fight their employer and expect to win.

Let us not forget that the Superintendent went so far as to petition the Maryland State Board of Education in an attempt to remove the duly elected Chairman, Matthew Lankford, which was an unprecedented move that sought to overturn the will of Somerset County voters in the 2024 election.

Meanwhile, the turmoil didn’t stop there.

  • The Supervisor of Special Education has departed.
  • The Chief Financial Officer resigned after only four months.
  • There is currently no Deputy or Assistant Superintendent.

After months of legal battles and administrative chaos, the matter is now closed. It is time for the Board to move forward by selecting a qualified leader with common sense who can restore stability, rebuild trust, and begin repairing the damage done to Somerset County’s schools and community.
