Maryland Implements Statewide Burn Ban to Ensure Safety
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has announced a statewide ban on open-air burning, which prohibits the use of charcoal grills and campfires. According to state law, open-air burning refers to fires where materials are burned outdoors or in containers not designed for controlled burning, such as furnaces or fireplaces with chimneys. However, residents can still utilize propane grills.
Violating this burning ban may result in penalties, with a first offense incurring a fine of $125.
“Although fines can be issued for breaching this ban, the primary objective is to convey to the public the seriousness of the situation and the essential need to take responsible actions to safeguard lives, property, and our environment,” commented State Forester Anne Hairston-Strang.
Several local counties were under a fire weather warning as of Friday.
Since October began, Maryland’s Forest Service has tackled over 24 wildfires, consuming around 75 acres, as highlighted in a news release.
