On three specific dates this summer, fishing enthusiasts in Maryland can cast their lines without the need for a fishing license. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has set aside June 1, June 8, and July 4 as license-free fishing days that are open to all residents and visitors.

During these days, individuals can explore various fishing locations across the state without having to purchase a fishing license, trout stamp, or registration.

The department organizes these license-free fishing days annually on the first two Saturdays of June and on the Fourth of July to coincide with the peak fishing season in spring and summer. On these days, individuals are permitted to fish for recreational purposes and possess finfish in both tidal and nontidal waters without needing a license.

However, anglers are reminded to adhere to all existing regulations, including size and catch limits detailed in the department’s fishing and crabbing guide.

This year, the department is highlighting the importance of catching invasive species like snakeheads and blue catfish, which have been impacting the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. These fish species are not only suitable for consumption but also offer a wide range of recipe options available on the Maryland’s Best website, as mentioned by the DNR.

Although free fishing days are allotted and specific license-free areas exist, individuals aged 16 or older are required to possess a fishing license, which can be conveniently obtained or renewed online, through the department’s mobile app, or in person at a department service center. Alternatively, licenses can also be acquired at participating retail sports license agents in the state or by contacting 866-344-8889 during standard business hours.

For individuals looking to enhance their fishing experience, the DNR offers resources such as angler access maps and fish identification charts. Additionally, anglers of all skill levels can subscribe to the weekly Maryland Fishing Report for the latest updates on fishing conditions and information.
