In Salisbury, Maryland, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) has announced plans to start a new bridge replacement project. The project will involve replacing the existing bridge over the Wicomico River.
The replacement of the US 13 Business bridge over the east branch of the Wicomico River is scheduled to begin in Spring 2024. This project aims to address the deteriorating condition of the current bridge.
According to SHA, the Design phase of the project is almost complete, with 90% progress reported on their website.
The original bridge was built back in 1937 and is now nearing the end of its service life. The current bridge has weight restrictions that limit access for commercial vehicles and does not have sidewalks compliant with ADA standards. The replacement bridge will address these issues by improving weight limits and providing pedestrian and bicycle access, as stated by SHA.
