The U.S. Department of Labor announced that initial unemployment benefit claims in Maryland went up last week compared to the previous week. The number of new jobless claims, which serves as an indicator of layoffs, rose to 3,003 for the week ending March 30, an increase from 2,254 in the prior week.
Nationwide, unemployment claims in the U.S. reached 221,000 last week, marking an increase of 9,000 claims from the previous week on a seasonally adjusted basis.
Iowa experienced the largest percentage growth in weekly claims, with a 97.8% increase, while the Virgin Islands had the largest percentage decrease in new claims, with a 50% drop.
