The following is a letter from Rosalind Hanson, a Montgomery County Parent and Moms for Liberty Chapter Chair regarding the use of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Lessons in Montgomery County Classrooms. She spoke to the Montgomery County Board of Education at Thursday afternoon’s meeting.
The link to the video is included at the end of the article.
Good afternoon, board members and Superintendent Taylor. My name is Rosalind Hanson.
As you may know, recently, the Southern Poverty Law Center was federally indicted on eleven counts of wire fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering. The evidence? They funneled nearly three million dollars of donor money to pay actual KKK and neo-Nazi operatives to do, say, and organize the hateful, racist things they claim to fight.
You’re probably wondering what this has to do with MCPS’scurriculum.
And MCPS has proudly championed it.
One should wonder with concern – if an organization will pay to manufacture hate, what exactly is its “free” curriculum designed to do?
We’ve been catfished.
Our classrooms, our content, the duty to educate without bias—hijacked by the same group that listed Aryan Nations and KKK members on its “extremist file” while quietly funding them.
To add insult to injury, Montgomery County taxpayers funded the scam.
In 2024, MCPS budgeted $1,000,000 for a new K-2 social studies curriculum that was required to meet the SPLC’s Social Justice Standards.
One million dollars. To hand our five-, six-, and seven-year-olds a curriculum that meets the standards of an organization that pays neo-Nazis. *Editor’s Note: Reference is made to the SPLC’s “Learning for Justice Social Justice Guidelines” in this document.
If you’re concerned at all, the contract for this curriculum ends next May.
But maybe you’re not concerned, because after all, the SPLC features’ MCPS on its website, bragging about how infusing SPLC’s standards into our eighth-grade history is, quote: ”re-educating white students so they could have the right historical knowledge “.
Educating kids a certain way based on the color of their skin seems pretty racist to me, but what do I know?
What I do know is that I’ve lived the damage this “fight hate” racket actually causes.
It doesn’t build community—it sows division and spreads lies.
Just look at this…
…a grown community leader now on the school board publicly smearing a fellow parent she has never once spoken to, all while preaching tolerance.*
If that’s what the SPLC can provoke an adult to do, imagine what it does to a kindergartener.
So now that you know that you’re in bed with an organization that directed actions and activities to advance the Charlottesville riots, what are you going to do about it?
Here are two suggestions:
First, follow Vanguard and Fidelity—they stopped awarding grants to the SPLC. Cut every tie to the SPLC. **See included links
Second, my friend Tyler O’Neil has gifted copies of his book, which exposes how the SPLC manufactures the hate it claims to fight. I welcome reading it together and getting to know one another.

I, for one, intend to keep my family as far away from anything connected to the KKK as humanly possible.
And I pray the same would be said for our school district, too.
Thank you.
