A couple of weeks ago our local Moms for Liberty chapter hosted a candidate’s forum for local school candidates. We invited ALL the candidates to participate. In Maryland, school board candidates are designated as “non-partisan” even though most of them personally ascribe to one of the major parties.

It’s not different in Talbot County where two incumbents are running against challengers and there is one open seat being contested between two first time candidates. We invited all of them, even the incumbents, starting in June so they could put the date of the forum on their calendar. Four candidates accepted the invitation, the two incumbents didn’t RSVP, even though they were repeatedly asked.

The format was simple, all candidates were given the same questions ahead of time and were given the same amount of time to answer those questions in a round robin fashion. There was a moderator who asked the questions. There were no “gotcha” questions.

As we got set up and the crowd started to come in the door, we posted a sign in sheet so they could see who was in attendance. Attendees were greeted with a friendly “Welcome and good evening.” Most of them responded in the same way.

But, there were those who were angry from the moment they set foot in the hall until they left.

Many couldn’t even respond to the greeting. Others angrily grumbled something under their breath that sounded more like a bear coming out of a long hibernation than a human response.

And they scowled. The entire time. Even when one of the candidates, who probably was on their side, gave her answers. It was as though someone had urinated on their granola bars that day or had used the wrong pronouns. (Actually, no one asked for their pronouns nor did anyone urinate on their granola bars.)

But it didn’t matter.

You see they hate us and conservative groups like Moms for Liberty. Why, you ask?

It’s simple. They hate conservatives because we don’t agree with everything progressives say or believe. We speak independently and believe in a parent’s rights to direct the upbringing of his/he child, regardless of the beliefs or sexual preferences of that child.

None of us have ever done anything to them, their families, their friends, etc. On social media, they call us vile names like racist, homophobe, dirty, lying etc. with absolutely NO evidence that we are what they say. They tell their friends to confront us on the street or in the grocery store. If we put signs in our yard, they deface or steal them.

Recently, in a local Facebook group, the extremists were out in full force degrading and demonizing our group as a “hate” group. Two particular people, one who doesn’t even live in our county, were furious because our group praised school board candidates and helped them file for candidacy. I thought helping people file to run was a good thing to do. I thought that getting more candidates to run was a good thing. I thought that progressives wanted “choice.” It seems they want to limit “choice” to want they want.

One of the incumbents in the race stated to someone that she was angry that anyone “dared to run” against her. Progressives were angry that we actually had a candidate’s forum. They said that we were biased, while they held a candidate’s debate without inviting three of the candidates. Guess which three? In a Facebook group, a woman who is a frequent commenter and perpetually spreads lies about Moms for Liberty, actually made a threat against me. I have the receipts: (I didn’t reveal her name, because, unlike her, I don’t wish harm on people, even when they attack me.)

Here is the first post. She was angry that I thanked people for helping candidates file:

Legal authorities are telling me that this message is an implied threat. The post before that can be called hate speech and slander.

I’ve never met this woman. She doesn’t know me. And, she can give no examples of me being racist, homophobic or transphobic. But she hates me and hates that I, or anyone who doesn’t agree with her, exists.

All because this woman doesn’t like that there are candidates running for school board in our county, a county she doesn’t live in, and that we helped them get registered. Imagine.

In another example, I wore a shirt a woman didn’t like in the grocery store the other day and she accused me of being a fascist, even though she doesn’t know me. She told me to get “educated” without even asking me my educational background. She hated me, plain and simple, right there in the frozen food aisle. Even her husband looked shocked at her behavior. Poor man.

Did I say she doesn’t know me?

Don’t misunderstand me, I am not talking about the normal, middle of the road Democrat. I am friends with people who describe themselves that way. We have conversations. We disagree about things. We don’t scowl and grunt at each other or call each other vile names. We don’t act like children and name call. We respect and like each other. These are normal people living normal lives. They don’t exist in perpetual anger and hatred.

Those are the hard-core extremists who actually hate those of us who disagree so much they wish physical harm on us. If they could, they would hurt us or even kill us.

If you have any doubt, look at the vitriol being thrown at hurricane victims in North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia, and Florida.

Or this interesting, hateful take:

Here’s link to his post on X:

Libs of TikTok on X: “Tiktoker suggests Hurricane Helene hitting predominantly White neighborhoods is “karma” for slavery https://t.co/bf6cCOEKOf” / X

They sure do like that word “karma” don’t they?

Can any normal, rational person imagine ever saying this and then, what’s worse, record and post it?

What is also weird is that some of these people have actually, at one point in their lives, been “normal.” One friend of mine talks about how someone she was friends with for a very long time suddenly and abruptly turned against her with as much vile as if she never knew her. Was it something the person ate? A sudden mental illness? Something in the water?

Some of these people believe something I heard in a podcast the other day. The person being interviewed talked about a group of progressives who believed that they ” were the only people in the world who had the answers to all the problems in the world. When you are someone who believes that you are part of the problem.” These progressive extremists believe that people are expendable in their quest to achieve their solution. And they are willing to sacrifice the rest of us.

Something has happened to society. Those on the fringes, both left and right, have been driven into a hate filled frenzy beyond imagination. The question is, what will we ever be able to do about it?

If I have learned anything in my life, it’s that returning the same kind of hatred on these people won’t help the situation. That doesn’t mean I won’t defend myself when attacked. I will. In some cases, I’ll use the tools the government has given me:

OAG Hate Crimes Online Web Portal and Reporting (md.gov)

Resources | OAG Hate Crimes Online Web Portal and Reporting (md.gov)

I don’t like that this portal exists. I think it is an invitation to falsely accuse people we don’t like of “crimes.” But it’s a two-way street.

I will save those actions for when they are truly needed. My mother used to say “kill them with kindness” which means the worse people treat you, the kinder you have to be in return. I don’t think kindness always works, but having facts, truth and logic behind you sometimes does.

And pray. Pray for them that the hate that consumes them dissipates and they find another purpose in their lives besides harming people who disagree with them.
